P.S. Krøyer: “Summer Evening on Skagen Sønderstrand”. 1893. Art Museums of Skagen.

Art Museums of Skagen is the common denominator for Skagens Museum and the two artists’ homes Anchers Hus and Drachmanns Hus.

Skagens Museum contains the world’s largest collection of artworks by the Skagen painters, an artists colony consisting of P.S. Krøyer, Anna Ancher, Laurits Tuxen, Michael Ancher among others. It was founded in 1908 by painters P.S. Krøyer and Michael Ancher alongside hotelier Degn Brøndum and the local businessman Victor Christian Klæbel. They wanted to preserve and immortalize what they had created and seen thrive during the past many years of their lives, and they wanted to keep the paintings in the town in which they were painted.

Skagens Museum lies where it was erected, but much has happened inside its walls as well as outside them. The museum has expanded and now also runs and preserves Anchers Hus, the home of painters Anna and Michael Ancher, as well as Drachmanns Hus, the home of painter and poet Holger Drachmann. Art Museums of Skagen records, registrates, preserves, disseminates, and researches its collection. This results in a varied portfolio of projects which span larger and smaller exhibitions, development projects in the three historical gardens and ateliers, projects which seek to diversify and engage new types of users, post doc-projects and much more.
