Introducing: Jože Plečnik’s House

Plečnik’s House is currently managed by Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana. The mission of this institution is to record, collect, document, valuate, preserve, interpret, study and present tangible and intangible heritage relating to the history of the City of Ljubljana and its wider surroundings, as well as to conduct pedagogical, andragogical and promotional activities, concerning the Institute’s operations and related vocational training. By holding exhibitions and compiling collections of museum objects, archive and library materials, and modern and contemporary works of art and art practices, the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana provides access to public cultural goods and engages in international exchange.

Jože Plečnik’s House, where he lived between 1921 and 1957, is an integral part of the Institute, especially dedicated to the promotion of research and dissemination work about the most important Slovenian architect. The Plečnik House has been a public museum since 1974, allowing visitors to experience the architect’s atelier, with desks bearing numerous instruments, plans and models. The complex has been renovated in 2013-15, leading to the set up of a new exhibition, a newly established research centre about the architect’s work and a rich program of temporary shows, hence enabling the Institute to expand the community’s understanding of the significance of Plečnik’s heritage. The House is a starting point for the exploration of Plečnik’s Ljubljana and the creative spirit of the great master – an icon of the Slovenian capital.
